Accent Reduction

The goal of this seminar is to help English as a Second Language individuals feel more confident delivering messages through clear, precise and distinct pronunciation and articulation of English.

In this workshop, participants will learn (to):

  • Basic human anatomy regarding sound production, articulation and how we communicate
  • What is accent
  • How to change habitual speaking patterns
  • Identify the common areas of difficulty through the use of IPA – International Phonetic Alphabet
  • Tailor these common areas of difficulty to the specific people in the room
  • How to find the correct pronunciation for you to model
  • Learn the correct physical mouth shape to pronounce challenging sounds in American Standard Speech
  • Understand anatomy, mimicry, and fun mirroring exercises
  • Apply newly learned IPA symbols to your written speech, practice new sound changes
  • Improve acting listening to others
  • Take home tips for many ways to improve active listening on your own
  • Understand the importance of correct emphasis of words and syllables
  • How to find the correct emphasis on your own in the future
  • Understanding the role of the jaw, tongue and facial muscles when producing sound
  • How to use our imagination to affect global change in our communication
  • How to use acting exercises to change habitual speaking patterns

Participants will emerge with confidence and a clear set of exercises and principles to follow to improve clarity of speech and reduce accent
